'Trust the Tale' Press Release, April 2011

The Rainbow Gallery at Durban House Heritage Centre in Eastwood will be hosting an exhibition entitled 'Trust the Tale' by East Midlands artists Jane Pepper, Nicola Rae and Janet Turville from Sunday 1st May until Sunday 29th May 2011.

The exhibition title, 'Trust the Tale', is drawn from Lawrence's own insight, in his capacity as critic, that we should 'Never trust the artist. Trust the tale'. The exhibition itself includes alternative interpretations and responses to various aspects of Lawrence's life and work. The artists, all recent visual arts graduates of the University of Nottingham, have each focused on aspects of Lawrentian heritage that most resonate with their individual practice to produce diverse work in a variety of media.

Jane Pepper uses photographic and digital collage techniques to develop natural forms in an investigation of pattern and repetition. Her work here references D.H. Lawrence's love of flowers and nature, his use of natural symbolism and his ideas about the Universe and man's place in it. Visit www.janepepper.co.uk to see more of Jane's work.

Nicola Rae uses book fragments, found materials and textile pieces to create a series of framed 'episodes' which allude to the history of D.H. Lawrence's relationship with the woman who was at one time his fiancee, Louie Burrows. Visit www.artspace-lboro.co.uk to see more of Nicola's work.

Janet Turville has used the handwritten letters of D.H. Lawrence to produce graphic designs from the 100 year old words and phrases. The resulting symbols seem to represent figures, animals, insects, angles and aliens. Visit www.janetturville.co.uk to see more of Janet's work.

The artists would like to thank the University of Nottingham, Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections for their assistance.
